Click this link, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22563650/, and read the article entitled, “Green Pig Gives Birth to Glowing Piglets”. Post a comment explaining the following….
1. What is you first impression of scientists being able to genetically alter the mother pig and then that trait being passed to some of her offspring?
2. What is the DNA in the pigs that glow now called?
3. Knowing what you know about genetics and heredity, explain in your own words why only two of the piglets ended up with the ablilty to glow.

I dont get how the DNA happened to make the piggies glowing.. Thats amazing! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
March 5th, 2010 at 9:12 am
the reason that happened was because they somehow got a way to make the mother pig glow so it would be passed down from the parent to the offspring thus making them glow.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:12 am
This is very interesting how these traits gave birth to glowing piglets.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:13 am
1. very weird and kind of cool
2. a trait
3. because those two piglets get the gene to glow
March 5th, 2010 at 9:13 am
I don’t get how the DNA changed the piggy..it’s surprising how DNA works on living things
March 5th, 2010 at 9:15 am
I thought that the scientists being able to do this was really cool because I did not think it was possible. The DNA in the pigs is called Recombinant DNA.
I think the reason wy only two of the eleven piglets got the gene is because of the probability that it would happen was not very high.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:16 am
1. It is vary wacky and weird but still is use full for helping humans out.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. It because of the traits, not all of them can get the glow but they can have it hidden in their genes of the piglets that don’t glow.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:16 am
My first impression of the scientist turning the mother pig green was that it is very cool. I never thought that you could change the color of an animal.
I think only two of the pigs turned green was because the father pig wasn’t green. So only two of the pigs got the allels that could make them change colors and be green. If the father had dominate genes for the allel maybe all of the pigs would’ve been green.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:17 am
1) I think that they should not be putting human diseases in animals. Right now when they put diseases in the, they might not be seeing that it could affect the animals health. It is sort of cool that the animals are glowing but people don’t know if it is hurting them.
2) It is recombinant DNA.
3) Because of the Hybrid or Purebred that the parents are. It all depends on what the parents are unless there was some type of mutation.
March 5th, 2010 at 9:17 am
It’s cool that the parent can send traits to their offspring
March 5th, 2010 at 9:36 am
1) I was shocked that they are able to alter the mother pig, and it was so cool when the genes were passed on.
2) Recombinant DNA.
3) Because the DNA was transferred into another, so the father was probabably hybrid.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
i want to be glow in the dark
March 5th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
1) I thought it was amazing, being able to alter the pigs genes to make it glow.
2) Recombinant DNA.
3) Only two piglets got the gene because the father was probably a hybrid.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
That is amazing! On an episode of the Big Bang Theory, Sheldon makes glow in the dark goldfish! Brilliant! I wish my dog would glow in the dark, or better yet, me.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
I thought it was SO cool that the little piglets can glow green under ultraviolet light! It’s so amazing. I feel bad for the baby piglets for being tested on though.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
1) I thought that it was amazing being to do that!! I want to learn how to do that.
2) Recombinant DNA
3) It was a 50/50 chance that the pigs would get the gene for glow. It was just chance.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
1) I was surprised that the mother pig was able to give birth to glowing pigs
2) Recombinant DNA
3) The pigs got the glowing gene probably by a mutation. Or probably if you see it in a punnet square . It will show 50% glowing.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
1)That’s crazy how they altered the pig and passed the trait on. I wonder if they are able to do that with other animals. It would be cool if they made up another trait to alter an animal.
2)The father must be a hybrid and that’s probably why only two of them glowed.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
1. My first impression to of the scientist genetically altering the pig was surprise and shock. It was amazing that they could use the pigs to help humans.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. Only two pigs got the glowing allele
March 5th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
I was amazed when the scientists were able to alter the mother pig! I hope they don’t do it to humans, but it’d be cool though.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
1. It was very weird to be seeing glowing pigs. It seemed to be something that i was unaware could happen. But, it was kind of freaky.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. it ended up with only two piglets ended up with the ability to glow, because the mama pig’s mate didn’t have the glowing trait.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
1) Wow! That was so cool how they were able to turn the pig green!
2)it is called recombinant DNA
3)Since the mother was green, the father was probably a hybrid.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
My first thought was that this is an awesome discovery, but then i realized that this is weird and i wouldn’t want my child to glow!
I think that this is possible because the gene of the parent was given to the offspring and then the offspring had the glowing trait.
March 5th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
1.) I think that its cool that they can alter the mother pig… Its crazy that scientists can have certain genes passed on.
2.) It is called Recombinate DNA.
3.) only two pigs glowed beacuse the traits only transferred to those two pigs.
March 5th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
1. I think that it is cool and the gene was passed on to the piglets was amazing.
2. Genetic Engineering
3. It was passed from the mother and the father probably a hybrid.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
1. Was kind of weird but kind of cool.
2. It is called Recombinant DNA.
3. Only two pigs glowed because the traits only transferred to those two pigs.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
1. I think that it is amazing that the pigs actually glowed!
2. It is called recombinate DNA.
3.the two pigs are only glow in the dark, because the gene wasn’t dominant in the other pigs DNA.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
That was….odd..kind of cool though
March 5th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
The glowing piglets were really weird!!! what did they mix it with?
March 5th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
My first impression was amazed I couldn’t believe my eye. The DNA is called recombinant DNA. I think only two piglets glowed because the gene was hybrid so it was a 50-50 chance of the florescent piggies. -Nick D block
March 5th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
1) I think it is strange but amazing how you can take someone’s DNA and put it in another living things body.
2)It is called Recombinate DNA
3)The pigs that didn’t grow was because they didn’t get the trait to do that but the other two pigs did get the combined trait to grow.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
1) I think the crossing would be bad/harmful to the pig. But i think it is cool how they can do that.
2) Recombinate DNA.
3) It was passed from their parents and they were probably hybrids.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
1. I think it is kind of odd for them just to alter a mother pig like that. On the other hand, it is kind of cool that she gave birth to glow in the dark pigs!!!
2. Recombinant DNA or Genetic Engineering
3. Only two of the offspring got the trait to glow probably because they got one recessive allele from their mother and one recessive allele from their father for glowing. So that would cause the pigs to get the glowing trait.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
1.I thought that it was really cool that its mom passed that gene on to her offspring
2.Recombinant DNA
3.The traits were only passed down to the 2 pigs
March 5th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
1.That must have taken a long time to figure out. Next we’ll have glow in the dark bacon… yuck.
2.Recombinant DNA.
3.Only two of the pigs got the traits because the parent pigs were not purebred for the trait.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
1.) I think it is really cool that they were able to pass on the gene to the piglets.
2.) Recombinant DNA
3.) I think only two of the piglets were able to glow because the piglets that glowed got the alleles that made it glow from both of the parents.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
1) I think it is pretty amazing that they can alter an organism’s DNA like that. It almost seemed like they were alien pigs!
2) It is called Recombined DNA.
3) Only two of the offspring glowed because the mother must have only passed on the glowing alleles to them, or the glowing allele could be recessive, so the regular allele masked the glowing allele given be the father.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
Thats cool because you can see pigs in the dark. Just image a glowing pig in the dark walking across a field. It’s called Recombinate DNA.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
1. It was really weird but cool
2. It’s called recombinant DNA
3. only 2 pigs glowed they were the only ones who received the dominant allele
March 5th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
1. I think that this is pretty sweet how this can even happen. Having a green pig that has glowing babies is amazing.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. Because of the parents either being purebred or hybrid. The offspring’s traits all depends on what the parents traits are unless a mutation occurred.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
1. My first impression was that it was kind of cool
2.recombinate DNA
3.The father might have been a hybrid
March 5th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
1. My first impression was that it was interesting
2.recombinate DNA
3.The father might have been a hybrid
March 5th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
1. The first impression of the pigs to me was so weird because it is so unusual to see animals glowing espcially for pigs. I thought it was very cool to have been able to see those pigs on pictures and videos. I would have never thought of glowing pigs at all in my life, but it is very cool how they made the DNA be transfered like that! It definetly was very interesting to see. I do not know if i would like to be those pigs though because of all the testings, but still fun.
2.It is called Recombinant DNA.
3. I think the traits must have been passed along from the mother and the father must have been a hybrid or purebread recessive because the other piglets would have been glowing too, but the father did not give the other gene to the pig.
March 5th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
1.I think it is wrong to mess with nature anyway I don’t know why we just ruined two pigs lives justed to be tested on
2.They embryos were injected with fluorescent green protein i am not sure what it is called
3.the mother was injected with the gene and when it gave birth it could have been a recesive cell and the mom and dad were both hybrid
March 5th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
1.I think that the whole thing is truly pointless. I mean why a glowing pig!? It is not practical and does not make any sense. Truly. It doesn’t.
2. Genetic Engineering
3.the chemical was put unnaturaly into the mothers body
March 5th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
I think that it is amazing that we have come this far in science that we can now mix breeds. At first i thought it was a little different but then i think its cool that we are able to mix breeds. The new name of the DNA is recombonant. Some of the kids are hybrids because they crossed an human organ with a piglet and the human allele showed up.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:14 am
1. That is really cool how it has passed on to the pigs
2. the genes were passed on to the piglets from the adult pigs.
3. After they mated i think they put a chemical into the mothers body.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:15 am
1. I think it is awesome how they are able to do this. Who knows what they will do in the future!
2. The DNA is now called fluorescent green protein
3. I think the probability had something to do with only 2 of the 11 babies born with the fluorescent green protein showing.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:16 am
1. Its amazing!!!!!! but i don’t get how they did it.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. I think it only showed up in 2 of the pigs because it wasn’t dominant to the other pigs.but still you have to admit that its awesome!!!!
March 8th, 2010 at 9:17 am
1)Recombinant DNA!
2)Only two piglets glowed because the father was a hybrid
3)Great Genetic Engineering
March 8th, 2010 at 9:17 am
1.I think it’s pretty cool. I mean GLOWING PIGS. I would’ve never had thought that would happen. I also think that we shouldn’t have made the pig glow, there probly freaked out when they look at themselves in the dark.
2. Genetic Engineering
3. I think it happened that way because they got alleles from there parents, but the parent’s alleles for glow was hidden so only two got the trait.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:17 am
1. I think its pretty cool how they can make a glowing pig. But I don’t think it is very useful. It would be cool to see other things they can discover with Genetic Engineering.
2. Genetic Engineering
3. The mother had something in her body that was put in manually.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:18 am
Piglets that glow is awesome but getting them to glow is even more awesome. Also the fact the people put chemicals in a pigs body is pretty unnatural, also glowing pigs how do the help people in life, but a FLYING glowing pig might help people but not a “normal” glowing pig.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:18 am
1. I think its amazing. I’m still wondering how they genetically altered the mother.
2. It is called recombinant DNA.
3. The mother must have had a recessive allele for the trait and the 2 piglets that glowed were most likely boys.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:18 am
1) interesting and cool
2)recombinant DNA
3)the mother still had the the Trait as a recessive allele
March 8th, 2010 at 9:19 am
1. I think its cool how they were able to make a pig fluorescent green. I’m not sure what the point of it was, but it was cool. They should make clones of people that are fluorescent green.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. If the mother was green, then the father was probably a hybrid.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:19 am
1. I think it’s weird that they can do that to a pig. Glowing pigs you don’t see that every day.
2. Genetic Engineering
3.The two pigs that glow are the only ones that glow because they got the trait from the mother pig. The other pigs didn’t get that trait from her.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:19 am
1.I think the glowing pigs are pretty cool. But, glowing pigs are pointless and are no different then normal pigs, all that is different is that they can glow
2. Recombinant DNA
3. The mother and father pig were both hybrid or purebred recessive for the glowing trait.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:19 am
1. I think that a glowing pig made no since at all. When I read the article I found out that it could help people and now i am ok with a glowing pig. The trait being passed down is helpful.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. the mom’s glowing might have been recessive and would only show up if the father had that trait. Both pigs are hybrid. It might have been because the gene was chemically put into the mother body.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:20 am
It is really cool and interesting to know that scientist can do this. But in other words I don’t think it is right making a pig glow.
I think it is Recombinant DNA
I think it was really rare to find a glowing pig so I think it must have been purebread reccesive.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:20 am
1. I think that a glowing pig is actually sort of interesting. No-body would ever think that a pig could glow.
2. It is called recombinant DNA.
3. Only two of the pig’s were glowing because the mother only passed down one of her traits to two of these pigs, not all of them.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:20 am
1. I think that it’s very cool that they can make pigs glow. But my first impression to scientists altering a pig’s DNA is that why do this? Does it help or is it just an experiment? If it is then how will a glowing pig help? Same for her offspring? What if they have genetic problems due to the fact that their DNA has been changed? Basicly, what is the point to a glowing pig?
2. Recombinant DNA
3. If only a two of the piglets got the gene for glowing body parts then it may be a recessive gene. They may have been a gene/ allele in the father pig that cancelled out the ability to glow.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:20 am
1) To me it was cool, but kind of pointless. Except the exploration of genetic engineering.
2)Recombinant DNA
3) The mother was injected with the gene of glowing, while the father was a hybrid.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:20 am
1. That’s kind of cool but also weird. I never knew there was such things as glowing pigglets?
2. It is called recombinant DNA
3. The chemical was put unnaturaly into the mother pigs body.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:21 am
I thought that it was weird that the pigs could glow in the light. I don’t really think they should have put the color in the parent in the first place. I don’t even know how they could have put the color in them. They were genetically engineered and they didn’t have a say on if they should be experimented on or not. It was a recessive trait but it was on the part where the male didn’t have any genes to stop it. When they mated only 2 of the glowing trait was passed on.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:21 am
1. My first impression was, “How did they do that? That’s so cool!” I think it is amazing how people were able to do something so amazing.
2. It’s called Genetic Engineering
3. I think this happened because it was a recessive trait but was at the point where the male didn’t have any genes to control it. When they mated only two of the glowing traits was passed on to their offspring.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:21 am
1) I think it’s wrong because it could possibly harm the pigs.
2) Genetic Engineering.
3) only two pigs because the trait for glowing might be recessive and some of the other pigs might have had a dominant trait to block it and became a normal pig that doesn’t glow.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:22 am
Wow how did Scientist do this? This is Genetic Engineering. Only two of the pigs were glowing and the other one(s) were not because one of the parents could be hybrid and the other one purebred so the pigs were purebred and hybrid so only two were glowing. And glowing could be recessive so only two got it and one of the parents could have a pig dominate gene.
March 8th, 2010 at 9:22 am
1. I think it is cool that you can do that because it is unusual.
2.recombinant DNA
3. Only two glowed because their father was a hybrid and they got the dominant trait
March 8th, 2010 at 11:01 am
I think this was very weird and unusual for a pigs nails to be glowing. When i first saw the video, i was expecting a whole pig to glow. But the nails are still werid
March 8th, 2010 at 11:01 am
1) It must have take a while to engineer a glowing pig. I wonder how long they worked on this project. There was most likely years of DNA changes ,changes in alleles, and other worked put into this project.
2) Recombinant DNA
3) The trait for glowing must have been a dominant trait. So both of the parents could have been hybrid, and passed a recessive trait of not glowing down to the offspring. And for the ones who are glowing, they could be hybrid or dominant.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:01 am
1) Our first impression of scientists being able to genetically alter the mother pig and then the trait being passed to some of her offspring is alright as long as you are not harming the pig or its offspring.
2) The DNA in the pigs that glow is now called Genetic Engineering.
3) Only two of the piglets ended up with the ability to glow because the parents could have been hybrids or one could have been a purebred, so the piglets could get the right genetic code, or genotype, to “glow.”
March 8th, 2010 at 11:02 am
My impression would be “I don’t belive it! This is a scientific breakthrough!” Some people may call a mutation, I call it genetic engineering. I think that the reason why only two out of the eleven piglets were born with the ability to glow because since their parents have the glowing gene, they must have been hybrid glowers and have passed the glowing trait to the 2 piglets that were in the news in 2006 while the other 9 had the non-glowing trait.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:03 am
1) i think it is really cool how they were able to genetically alter a pig to make it glow!
2) its called Recombinant DNA
3) Because the father was a Hybrid, and they got the dominant trait. It all depends on what the parents are unless there was some type of mutation that were to take place.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:03 am
I think glowing pigs are really weird. I don’t even understand how scientists able to to do this and why they do it. It is kind of interesting how two of the piglets can glow but the other ones can not. It must have been because the father and mother must be hybrids for glowingness. I think this a very odd test or experiment and I personally am not happy with it. I don’t think scientists should inject stuff into a pig so they can get glowing pigs. This is just my opinion though.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:03 am
When I first read it i thought it was really cool, but how was that possible. A glow in the dark pig!I Its genetic engineering. Only two of the pigs were able to glow because maybe one of the parents didn’t have the glowing gene and so the one that didn’t glow must of had that one.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:04 am
I think it is cool how far humans have come. We can make pigs glow in the dark, and we’re working on growing organs that we can put in humans. It is interesting how the original pig was able to pass the trait to the offspring. Finally I wonder if glowing is dominant, recessive, or codominant. In all I think it was really interesting.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:04 am
(1).My first impression of the scientist changing around the DNA of mother pig was really cool. You would’ve never known that by changing the trait or genes in a mother pig would’ve gotten pasted on to her breed.(2). The DNA that that is in the ppig that made it glow is called ‘Recombinant DNA’. (3). The reason why only two of the mother’s offspring got the trait is because their father did not carry that trait for all the piglets to have,so because the piglet’s father was a hybrid only two of the piglet’s got the glow which was a dominant trait from their mother.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:04 am
The first thing that popped in my head was Oh My God. That is so amazing, like how can people do that. I guess that is how genetic engineering works.I think this happened because it was a reccesive trait and the male didn’t have any genes to control it. When they mated only two of the lighting up traits was passed on to there offspring.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:04 am
I think it is great that scientist have found away to alter pigs, Because the other pig can produce off springs that have that trait. The DNA of the glowing pig is florescent piglets. Two of the eleven piglets had the ability to glow is because the mother only of had to give the two pigs the gene for it and the other pigs did not get the gene.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:05 am
1. I really think that the glowing pigs is interesting and awesome because having a glowing pig would be amazing to deal with.
2. The two glowing piglets were glowing because their father is a hybrid and the piglets got the dominant trait from their mother.
3. The scientists were changing around the DNA of the piglets and that is recombinant DNA.
4. One of the parents is a dominant and one of them is a hybrid so they got the dominant from one of their parents.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:05 am
1. I think that how they altered the mother pig is insanely awesome. But i would think that the trait would follow through because one of them would have to give some of her traits to her children.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. The reason why only two where born and able to glow was because the father was probably heterozygous (hybrid) with one dominant trait and one recessive trait so the glowing pigs must not have gotten the dominant trait from their father.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:05 am
1. I think it’s really cool to see what our scientists can do now that we have such advanced equipment.
2. Recombinant DNA
3. The parents must of been hybrid or purebred, so that only two of the piglets could become glow in the dark and all of the others would be normal
March 8th, 2010 at 11:06 am
1) Well I think it is amazing to make glowing pigs. It shows how far we have come in science.
2) recombinant DNA.
3) The reason for two of the pigs having the ability to glow is that the mom was injected with glowing chemical and the dad wasn’t. So the pigs were hybrids.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:06 am
1. I think that it was really cool how some of the pigs glow.
2.Recombinant DNA
3.Only two of the pigs got the dominant allele so those are the ones that glowed.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:07 am
I think its sweet that they found a way to make the piglets grow just by adding it with green proteins. I wonder if they can do that with other things or humans. I also dont know if there is a significance.
March 8th, 2010 at 11:23 am
I think that it is cool to change a pigs genetics. This is called recombinant it is where you recombine genes. They gave the gene to the children. The kids of the pig glowed because of the chromosomes they got from the recombinant.
March 11th, 2010 at 7:25 am
I thought the who pig was going to glow but instead just the pig glowed up i waould not like to be those pigs because of getting tested and stuff like that.
